Biography

Le Motel, alter ego of Fabien Leclercq, is a Brussels-based music producer, DJ, composer & graphic designer. His love
for ethnic music and field recording combined with elements from footwork, hip-hop, jazz and techno leads to a beautiful collage between electronic and organic elements. As a music producer and film composer his versatility has taken him to festivals and clubs in every direction as naturally as he has ventured out to the less accessible areas of the globe as a field recordist.

For many years, Fabien Leclercq has been behind initiatives aimed at promoting the Belgian and Brussels electronic music scene. Whether through his personal musical creations, through his collaborations with various renowned French-speaking artists (Yellowstraps, Veence Hanao, Roméo Elvis, Zwangere Guy, Swing or l’Or du commun), when composing music for Belgian films (Binti by Frederike Migom or Aller/Retour and Rosie & Moussa by Dorothée van den Berghe) or even organizing events promoting the local scene.
Le Motel’s musical universe is very varied, reflecting his many influences: jazz, world, UK garage, trip hop, techno, footwork, ambient, etc. He enjoys experimenting with sounds, regardless of the style or musical label. “Oka”, his first physical album, is a good example. It’s all there: we can hear the influence of electronic music as well as samples from the pygmies of Central Africa or Vanuatu in Oceania. At the same time, he develops numerous collaborations where he adapts his universe to that of the artist with whom he collaborates, while keeping his own identity. He contributes to giving a strong and identifiable musical color to the artists with whom he collaborates. His universe is universal. Through his different projects, he builds bridges between different musical identities, different eras and different cultures.

His new project “Maloca” is part of this permanent search to go beyond borders to unite. A platform more than a label. An artistic and political approach where the local scene and global influence are not in opposition but, allow us to consider responses to the challenges facing the music industry and society in general.
