Biography
Margaret Hermant is a violonist, harpist and composer based in Brussels, who graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.
She is a founding member of several music groups, including Echo Collective, Quatuor MP4, and Bow Quintet, which has led to collaborations with a variety of renowned artists and composers such as Jóhann Jóhannsson, Adam Wiltzie, Dustin O'Halloran, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Stars of the Lid, Joep Beving, Christina Vantzou and Rutger Hoedemaekers. These collaborations helped to bring works in the Post Classical music genre to life.
Margaret Hermant's artistry extends beyond collaborative efforts. As a solo composer, she has delved into the realm of movies scores, theater productions, art installations and dance performances. Her compositions predominantly feature the sounds of the harp and violin, often woven together with processed acoustic elements.
In this creative process, Margaret collaborates closely with sound engineer and producer Fabien Leseure, always striving to merge original acoustic nuances with innovative effects and sound processing techniques.
In 2021, Margaret made her mark on the classical music landscape with the debut track, "Under", released at the prestigious label Deutsche Grammophon, as part of the "Project XI" compilation. The following year, she composed the track "Lightwell" for Mari Samuelson's album "Lys".
In 2023, she unveiled her first full-fledged soundtrack, marking yet another milestone in her burgeoning career. Her recent work as film composer includes projects such as Touché by Martina Moor or 72H by Anna Savchenko, both documentaries set to be released in 2024.
As a sought-after musician, Margaret has contributed to the film industry, performing harp and violin for several films, including Lion (Garth Davis), No Man's Land (Oded Ruskin), The Princess (Ed Perkins), Trapped (Baltasar Kormákur), Le Fidèle (Michaël R. Roskam), Bitter Flowers (Olivier Meys) or The Water Man (David Oleyowo).
Her discography includes collaborations with Echo Collective, such as "12 Conversation with Thilo Heinzmann" (composed by Jóhann Jóhannsson) on Deutsche Grammophon and "The See Within" (composed by Echo Collective) on 7K!
