Biography
Mirek Coutigny is a composer, pianist and music producer, working from Ghent.
After obtaining his masters degree in composition and piano from the Conservatory of Ghent, he composed music for several short films by directors Joachim Dejonghe, Pieter Dejonghe and Joachim Kamoen.
Around the same time Coutigny also started making waves as a solo artist. He improvised on sketches that he wrote over a span of 10 years and reworked them for piano, strings, percussion and electronics. This culminated into several EP’s and full albums, carefully blending neoclassical, electronic and postrock influences into a grand, cinematic sound. Released on labels like Icarus Records and Consouling Sounds, the records were met with raving international reviews, drawing comparisons to artists such as Jóhann Jóhannsson or Ólafur Arnalds. Since 2018 he has been performing in concert halls and festivals like Leffingeleuren, Trix, 30CC and De Bijloke.
"Keyboard king Mirek Coutigny impresses with contemporary classical sounds that remind us of greats like Nils Frahm, Max Richter or Hauschka. The organic compositions of this young Ghentian sound challengingly complex at times, enchantingly simple at others. What a discovery! (VI.BE)"
Next to his career as a solo artist, Mirek Coutigny remained active in the film industry. He created the original score to Everything Will Be Fine, a short film by Joachim Dejonghe starring Joke Devinck and wrote the music for a new video installation by Klaus Verscheure together with Tom McRae. Furthermore, Coutigny is a sought-after music editor and music mixer and has been active on various soundtracks, including Young Hearts (Berlinale 2024, composed by Ruben De Gheselle), Bring Them Down (composed by Hannah Peel) or high-end primetime ITV series Professor T (composed by Hannes De Maeyer).
